If you travel by air, your plane will land at the Daytona Beach International Airport. Delta and US Airways service the airport, offering daily flights to and from Atlanta and Charlotte. The airport is conveniently located less than four miles southwest of the downtown area, with easy access via Orange Avenue and International Speedway Boulevard. Once you land, you'll find plenty of ground transportation options. There are several taxi companies that offer transportation to the city for a $15 to $20 fare, and you can find them just outside of the baggage claim area. The Votran municipal bus (386-761-7700) stops at the airport on the hour and the half hour each day, and its fares are very affordable at $1.25 per trip. There are also several private car and limousine services that will take you to your final destination, or you can stop at the Thrifty, Hertz, Dollar, Enterprise, Budget, Alamo or Avis car rental counters directly across from baggage claim to pick up a rental car.
The city's coastal location provides ocean breezes that keep the winters mild and the summers cool. Expect winter temperatures to average 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and summer temperatures that usually top out at less than 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Always pack lightweight clothing that you can layer, however, so that you're ready for any fluctuations in the weather. No matter what season you decide to visit, you'll find plenty of things to see and do. Make sure to explore the city's beaches and world-class golf courses. The Daytona Flea and Farmer's Market is a great place to while away an afternoon, or head over to the Marine Science Center for an educational afternoon. Racing enthusiasts won't want to leave Daytona Beach without visiting the Daytona International Speedway and taking part in the Richard Petty Driving Experience.
With its beautiful beaches, ocean breezes and laid-back lifestyle, Daytona Beach is a place that you will want to visit again and again. Whether you're in town for the Daytona 500 or just want to take a break from the cold winter weather, you are sure to come away with lasting vacation memories. When you are ready to book your flights to Daytona Beach, remember to visit Orbitz.com where you will have access to some of the lowest travel prices available.
Summer is high season here, and though it brings temperatures in the sweltering 90s, that doesn’t discourage millions of families from making this their go-to summer vacation.
If you travel during late spring or early fall, when school is in session, you can get balmy temperatures with a fraction of the crowds. As an added bonus, you might witness sea turtle season: Toward the end of May, mama turtles climb out of the ocean at night to lay their eggs in the dunes that border some of Daytona’s wilder beaches. In the fall, baby turtles ditch their “cribs” and head back into the surf.
Even with a crackdown on spring break hijinks (Daytona now attracts half the college crowd it once saw), March can still be hectic. So, if you’re a coed looking for camaraderie, early spring is still the ticket. Want a different kind of party? The beach town has become wildly popular with motorcyclists in recent years, hosting two massive biker-fests, Biketoberfest in October and Bike Week in March. Beware: Hotels tend to increase prices for this group, so plan accordingly.
If you think Daytona Beach doesn’t have a winter, you’re mostly right. Temperatures rarely dip below 50, even in January, and sun is practically guaranteed. The Daytona 500 is in February, bringing with it thousands of race fans and their own cultural contributions (beer helmets, wraparound sunglasses). If you’re not interested in that kind of race, consider the Daytona Beach Half Marathon, which includes a lap around the Daytona International Speedway in addition to long beachside sections of the course.
